Viagra: What you need to know

Viagra is probably the best known drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (also known as “impotence”). “The little blue pill” is known all over the world, but many people still do not know how it really works. Before men take Viagra for the first time, there are usually some questions that come up. What is Viagra actually and what does it do in the body? Are there any side effects or is it maybe even harmful? In this article we explain everything you need to know about Viagra.

What is Viagra?

Ironically, the Pfizer researchers who discovered the erectile benefits of Viagra actually developed the drug to treat heart problems. Pfizer was disappointed with the results of the first clinical trials of Viagra, and by 1993 the pharmaceutical giant was ready to abandon the project. However, an observant nurse noticed that many of the men were lying on their stomachs after receiving the experimental sildenafil. It turned out that the men were embarrassed because they were getting erections. At that moment, Pfizer knew they were on to something HUGE….

How Viagra works

To understand what Viagra does and how it works, we first need to understand how you get an erection.

When the brain becomes aroused, it sends signals to the penis that lead to the release of a chemical called cGMP. This chemical relaxes certain muscle cells in the erectile tissue of the penis, increasing blood flow to the area. After ejaculation, the body releases an enzyme called PDE-5, which breaks down cGMP, causing erection. Viagra and other drugs have the active ingredient “sildenafil”. This increases blood flow to the penis so that an erection can be easily achieved and maintained.
The maximum dose of Viagra is 100 mg. Taking more than 100 mg of Viagra (i.e., more than the maximum dose) has no positive effect on your sexual performance. It does, however, increase side effects, such as headache, facial flushing, or even short-term vision loss.

Taking Viagra: What you need to know

For Viagra to work properly, you should take it on an empty stomach one hour before sex. You must also be sexually aroused for Viagra to take effect. You should also avoid drinking alcohol before taking Viagra. Alcohol can reduce the effectiveness of Viagra.

How long Viagra lasts

According to independent studies, the effect of Viagra lasts about four to six hours after taking it. Typically, the effects kick in after 30-60 minutes – assuming you’re sexually aroused. If the effect of Viagra has worn off, it is important that you do not take any more Viagra within 24 hours.
